Terry Pratchett’s Discworld Doll Challenge

I invite you to visit the Discworld and create a character from one of the many books in the series written by my favorite author, Terry Pratchett.  Discworld is a fantasy place, quite similar to Earth and yet has many types of characters we do not commonly encounter on Earth.  There are the Wizards at the Unseen University, The Wyrd Sisters (Witches that practice headology), The Watch (comparable to our police forces), The Nac Mac Feegles (6” tall red headed blue pictsies with strange Scottish-like speech who would rather drink and fight than anything else) and my personal favorite character who appears in all the Discworld books sooner or later, DEATH, who speaks in all capital letters and adores cats.  There are several characters that pop up in multiple books and a few that are featured in one book only and all of these characters are welcome in this challenge.

We will be sending the dolls to AFIC for a display so if you are going to participate in that please follow these size rules: Adult size: approx 15", Dwarves and other small folk 7.5", and trolls/ogres - larger than 15" If you're not going to send a doll to the show - don't worry about the size restrictions!

Challenge Rules:

  • Create a doll depicting any character from any Discworld book.
  • Use any medium you choose to make a doll .
Send a photo to Judi, no later than April 1, 2009.
  • List the book you read and found your character in so others can read about your character.
  • Questions or concerns? Contact Judy Skeel (write to Judi for email addy)
  • Have a ball.  Or a Disc, as it were.

Although there are currently 36 Discworld novels and many of the characters appear in multiple books, you don't need to have read this series in order. I’ve listed the books by theme then chronologically should you choose to read them all.  Trust me, they are addicting.  Terry Pratchett is amazing with his British humor and accomplishments at satire.  He could make you split your sides open with a story about tying one’s shoes if he so desired.  All the books I’ve listed are available at Amazon.com, many are at my local library and some available as books on tape. The Hogfather is available on DVD in the USA as well as Great Britain while the Color of Magic can only be seen in Great Britain or in 10 minute long segment son You Tube.  If you're the sort of reader who hates to miss any references, you might want to track down a copy of The Discworld Companion or the Reading Order Guide

Around the World in LESS than 80 days!

Sponsored by Angela Jarecki

A traveling doll.  We will have a team of 4 people, that live in different places, each will make the same little doll. Each doll will travel with a passport and "gifts" to each of the other 3 people she would travel to. Each of the people she travels to gives the doll a gift (to add to her box...maybe something as simple as ribbons, beads, etc.) AND takes the doll around and takes pictures of her at local fun spots or tourists places. Each person that has the doll visit, stamps the passport in some way.

The pictures that are taken can be added to the box on a CD or actual photos. Each person would have the doll for 3 weeks only!!!

I will make a little pattern for the doll..... a simple doll that would be no larger than 8" to save on postage. Then off they would travel...maybe starting by July~.....we could call it "Around the world in LESS than Eighty days!!!"

Sign ups are open until June 20th.

Beautiful Becky of Jerusalem Challenge

Sponsored by Rivkah Rosenfeld

In the current issue of Soft Dolls and Animals Magazine, part of my Becky doll  CLASS  (which retired and never really ran for very long) is published along with the pattern.  The article really is not complete and I've decided to make the 'real thing' available to all dreamers...

I also thought it would be great fun to sponsor a challenge,  Got the green light from our Judi so without further adieu...

The 'Make a Baby Dreamer' challenge!  Becky will be our official Doll Street Baby... Judi will post the entire class and all the pattern parts for members only , and I guess we'll all vote !  There are many new techniques in this class, so get ready for a challenge!

Deadline and prizes to be announced soon!
